In my last post, I talked about the anime that otaku ranked as the top choice of 2012. However, 2012 was a year that saw the release of numerous masterpieces besides <Sword Art Online>. I would like to introduce another anime that still boasts a solid fanbase to this day: <JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure>!
No matter where in the world it is, there is a meme on the internet asking, “Is this a JoJo reference too?!” While <Sword Art Online> may surpass it in anime sales, <JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure> has much higher recognition in terms of memes. This anime was released on video in 1993 and gained popularity. Later, it was remade and aired for TV in 2012, and this 2012 version is the anime I will introduce today.
The title “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure” is derived from the nickname “JoJo” of the main character, “Jonathan Joestar”. Its unique yet serious art style, contrasted with its “crazy” plot development, is the secret to its popularity. It has continued through seven seasons to this day. While it initially focused solely on supernatural abilities, it is now famous for its unique power structure known as “Stands.”
The defining characteristic of this anime lies in its distinctive wordplay and gag scenes. The story progresses with seriousness, yet the comedic moments provide a clear balance of pace. Thanks to this, once you get used to its distinctive art style, you will find yourself watching without realizing how much time has passed.
<JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure> is a must-watch for any otaku. This is because it is frequently parodied in numerous modern works. I am confident that no matter what kind of anime you watch, knowing about <JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure> will definitely enhance your otaku life. I hope this has introduced you to <JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure>. If you happen to have watched JoJo, please feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments!
